A study reported by the Journal of the American Medical Association reported a 70 percent lower incidence of mental retardation in the children of mothers who had taken magnesium supplements during pregnancy. The incidence of cerebral palsy was 90 percent lower. Possible manifestations of magnesium deficiency include confusion, insomnia, irritability, poor digestion, rapid heartbeat, seizures, and tantrums; often, a magnesium deficiency can be synonymous with diabetes. Magnesium deficiencies are at the root of many cardiovascular problems.

TOXICITY: Artificial D2 hypervitaminosis - calcified bone, artery and tissue hardening, muscle cramps, irritability, mental retardation; infants 1000-2000 units per day; adults 5,000-25,000-300,000 units daily over several months may damage the kidneys and heart. ABSORPTION: Formed internally when liver cholesterol molecules (ergosterol) underthe skin are activated by ultravioletwavesofSunlightto7-dehydrocholesterol, to Cholecalciferol D3, the provitamin form in plants and animals; ispresent in some foods.
Phenylketonuria (PKU) an inherited genetic defect in children causing mental retardation which prevents the body conversion of Phenylalanine to Tyrosine, a lack of body Tyrosine. TYROSINE SOURCES: Potatoes, apples, wheat germ, sesame seeds, avocados, mushrooms, yeast, ripe banana, avocados, alfalfa, carrots, beets, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, parsnip, asparagus, peppers, strawberries, apricot, cherries, apple, watermelon, figs, almonds, and herring.

An example is phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic disorder of metabolism which, without a specific environmental intervention, causes mental retardation. Although the population variance for PKU susceptibility is completely explained by genetic factors (heritability = 1.0, or 100%), the administration of a low phenylalanine diet to the at-risk infant during a critical period prevents the disorder from appearing. PKU is an excellent example of biologist Richard Lewontin's observation that a "trait can have a heritability of 1.

Down's syndrome, mental retardation marked by 3 copies of Chromosome21. Chromosome 22: Neurofibromatosis type-2, auditory nerve and Brain tissue tumors. Chromosome 23: The X/Y gene: Hemophilia, of blood hemorrhaging; muscular dystrophy (Duchenne and Becker types) of muscle deterioration; and AdrenoLeukoDystrophy (ALD), a nerve disease. NobelprizeshavebeengivenforGenediscoveries: in 1993 to Phillip Sharpe/ U.S., and Richard J. Roberts/U.K. for noting 12 years ago that some Genes are naturally split or fragmented; which led to progress in gene-splicing against inherited diseases.
Fetal exposure to alcohol may be the greatest cause of mental retardation. Theory: Alcoholism may be abetted by unresolved oral drives and parent dependency, or malnutrition (Take the B-Vitamins and Trace minerals). Deficiencies of B-Complex and Trace minerals developed alcoholism in 33% of the population; whereas in those receiving 3 times the normal nutrients alcoholism developed in 1 %.

Iodine deficiency in children may result in mental retardation. In addition, iodine deficiency has been linked to breast cancer and is associated with fatigue, neonatal hypothyroidism, and weight gain. Excessive iodine intake (sometimes as little as 750 micrograms daily) may inhibit the secretion of thyroid hormone and can produce a metallic taste and sores in the mouth, swollen salivary glands, diarrhea, and vomiting. Sources Foods that are high in iodine include dairy products (from cattle fed iodine-supplemented feed and salt licks), iodized salt, seafood, saltwater fish, and kelp.
Lead poisoning can eventually lead to blindness, loss of memory, mental disturbances, mental retardation, paralysis of the extremities, and even coma and death. Chronic lead poisoning can also cause impotence, infertility and other reproductive disorders, and liver failure. Lead is one of the most widely used metals in the United States today, and it is estimated that a large number of people have high levels of lead in their bodies.
It is used in the treatment of epilepsy, mental retardation, muscular dystrophy, ulcers, and hypoglycemic coma, a complication of insulin treatment for diabetes. It is a component of folate (folic acid), a B vitamin that helps the body break down amino acids. Because one of its salts is monosodium glutamate (MSG), glutamic acid should be avoided by anyone who is allergic to MSG. Glutamine Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid found in the muscles of the body. Because it can readily pass the blood-brain barrier, it is known as brain fuel.
The disorder—named for English physician John Langdon Down—occurs in approximately 1 in every 800 to 1,000 live births, and usually results in mental retardation with distinctive physical abnormalities. The incidence of Down syndrome increases with the age of the parents, especially if the mothers are thirty-four or older. The risk is also higher for children of parents who have already given birth to a Down syndrome child.
In contrast, neonatal ALD can affect either male and female babies, with symptoms including mental retardation, facial abnormalities, seizures, retinal degeneration, weak muscle tone, enlarged liver, and adrenal dysfunction. This form usually is present from birth and progresses rapidly. The onset of X-ALD, on the other hand, can occur either in childhood or adulthood. The childhood form, with symptoms usually starting between the ages of four and ten years, is the more severe.

In Gottesman's view, schizophrenia is "the same kind of common genetic disorder as coronary heart disease, mental retardation, or diabetes...."1 Is Schizophrenia a Genetic Disorder? A Closer Look at Gottesman's "Figure 10" of the Schizophrenia Risk Among Various Types of Relatives The title of Schizophrenia Genesis's Chapter 5 asks whether schizophrenia is "inherited genetically." Here, Gottesman outlined various kinship correlations that he said were consistent with genetic theories of schizophrenia's causation.
Can result in mental retardation and other neurological problems. If detected early enough, the condition can be prevented by means of a special diet. Poliomyelitis (Polio). A contagious viral disease of the central nervous system that can lead to paralysis. Polygenic Disorder. A disorder believed to result from the combined action of many genes. Hereditary patterns are usually more complex than those of single-gene disorders. Polymorphism. Multiple forms of a gene that are found in a given population, and often persist for many generations. In humans, skin color is a polymorphic trait.

Phenylalanine concentrates in the placenta of "aspartame babies" for birth defects and mental retardation, attention deficit disorder and autism; and breaks down into DKP for brain tumors in animals (brain tumors have high aspartame). Aspartame causes Oxygen deprivation; in an airplane at high altitude Aspartame may cause dizziness, vertigo, memory loss, lost vision, epileptic fits, several pilots suffered convulsions after drinking Equal in coffee. Considered a molecular holocaust, when God-given Stevia is plentiful, but controlled. SEE The Bressler Report.

On the other hand, we have the example of PKU, a genetically inherited disorder which leads to mental retardation only if a dietary intervention is not made when the child is an infant. Thus PKU, whose genetic influence is certainly "heavier" than schizophrenia's, is prevented with a relatively simple environmental intervention. In the case of schizophrenia, Gottesman and others are able to claim important genetic influences only because effective interventions to prevent or "cure" schizophrenia have not yet been discovered.

A known carcinogen, anatoxin is twenty times more toxic than DDT, and ingestion of this fungus has been linked to mental retardation and lowered intelligence. To prevent anatoxin ingestion, the FDA enforces a ruling that 20 parts per billion is the maximum of aflatoxin permitted in all foods and animal foods, including all nuts and nut products. Still, to ensure your own safety, when purchasing nuts, do so from a grocery where the nuts have been stored in a dry, cool environment (the fungus grows when the temperature is 86 to 96 degrees F. and the humidity is high).
In fact, one rural Georgia town had twice the average rate of mental retardation due to a diet high in homegrown peanuts. Because of this link, pregnant women are cautioned to stay away from peanuts and foods containing peanuts during pregnancy. The FDA does have a 20-parts-per-billion maximum limit of aflatoxin in food. Since this fungus likes warm and moist environments, you should store your peanuts in a cool, dry place. Roasted peanuts last longer than raw peanuts. Peanuts also contain large amounts of oxalate.

The thyroid gland plays a major role in the formation of the brain during early development, and hypothyroidism during this stage can lead to severe mental retardation (cretinism). It has also been noted that the incidence of Down's syndrome is 30 percent higher in fluoridated communities than unfluoridated ones.148 Down's syndrome is associated with thyroid dysfunction.

Marlowe notes, "a metal that produces subtle cognitive alterations in many children may produce a learning disability or mental retardation in those who are especially susceptible because of genetic, perinatal, or other factors e.g. malnutrition. Under-nutrition can influence susceptibility to metal toxicity. Deficiencies in calcium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus are all known to increase susceptibility, and the large majority of studies reviewed here have not examined nutritional correlates.

These defects can lead to mental retardation. Fragile-X syndrome is an inherited disorder of males and is second only to Down's syndrome as an identified cause of mental retardation. French investigators reported, in 1981, that oral supplements of folic acid improved many of the behavior abnormalities of the disorder. One study reported in 1986 that some fragile-X syndrome patients given 10 milligrams daily of folic acid showed some improvement in behavior. A few prepubertal boys in the study showed some improvement in IQ but not the older children.

It is characterized by severe mental retardation along with brain and eye defects. Other abnormalities may include cleft lip or palate, heart and genitourinary defects, and malformed ears. More than 80% of babies born with trisomy 13 do not survive past the age of 1. The remainder of this protocol will focus on a discussion of Down syndrome. CHARACTERISTICS AND DIAGNOSIS Infants with DS are usually quiet, cry infrequently, and have poor muscle tone. Physical features include a small head, a broad, flattened face, slanting eyes, and a short nose. Ears are small and set low on the head.
CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITIES Down syndrome is characterized as a chromosomal disorder, resulting in mental retardation and physical abnormalities. Persons born with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome, making three of a kind, known as trisomy. Of all Down syndrome (DS) cases, 95% are caused by trisomy 21. People with this type of trisomy disorder generally live until their 30s or 40s. DS is characterized by delayed physical and mental development, with numerous physical abnormalities. Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) occurs in one of every 3000 births.

It is also known that children absorb lead much easier than adults,164 especially when they also suffer from an iron deficiency. Unlike cadmium, lead passes through the placenta without difficulty. In 1991 the Centers for Disease Control set the maximum acceptable level of blood lead at 10 micrograms per deciliter (10 ug/dl). At least one study found that children with blood lead levels from 7-10 ug/dl developed behavioral and cognitive impairment.165 Of particular concern is the estimate that 17 percent of children in the United States alone may have levels exceeding 15 ug/dl.

Studies have shown that prolonged used of antibiotics may cause damage to the fetus and mental retardation and even autism after birth; antibiotics should not be used during pregnancy unless approved by your obstetrician. There have been a few studies that show a possible decreased effectiveness of birth control pills when a patient is on oral antibiotics. It is important to follow dosing recommendations when taking prescribed antibiotics. Tetracycline (Sumycin, Achromycin, Panmycin) needs to be taken on an empty stomach (which means 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals).

Chronic exposure to lead may result in birth defects, mental retardation, autism, psychosis, allergies, dyslexia, hyperactivity, weight loss, shaky hands, muscular weakness, and paralysis (beginning in the forearms). Children are particularly sensitive to lead (absorbing as much as 50% of the ingested dose) and are prone to ingesting lead because they chew on painted surfaces and eat products not intended for human consumption (e.g., hobby paints, cosmetics, hair colorings with lead-based pigments, and even playground dirt).
