I also saw that many of the patients had significant psychological problems, so as a third-year medical student at a medical ward, I really saw this. I began calling the psychiatric consults all the time, and many cases were cracked open because we had a psychological consult. I would tune in: This is a psychological problem. It's manifesting physically, but it's psychological, so I became a psychiatrist and family therapist.
Mike: And you practiced this for many years.
Cousens: Yes, and I still do. It's a holistic thing that allows me to do that whole model. |

If that was the case, we simply cured a psychological condition and healing the growths was a byproduct.
Believing Doctor: Precisely. That's the whole point. The new studies are showing that many of the physical ailments that we treat are the result of psychological experiences—subconscious beliefs that program the body. The condition that we just treated was the expression of our patient's inner experience—her beliefs.
Skeptical Doctor: If that's true, then where does that leave us? Are we curing physical or psychological conditions?
Believing Doctor: Precisely!
Skeptical Doctor: Hmm . . . |

Strangely, many parents actually reward their children for good behavior by buying them unhealthy fast food meals, thereby creating a psychological association between good feelings and junk food. (Fast food restaurants further exploit this psychological link by building playgrounds and running feel-good advertisements that emphasize friends and fun, then link those good vibes to their food products.)

Program Yourself for Success
Rather than using psychological therapies in an attempt to reduce food intake, our focus is to utilize techniques that promote a positive self-image and high self-esteem. Let's face it, there is tremendous stigma attached to being overweight or obese that causes a lot of psychological trauma. Fashion trends, insurance programs, college placements, and job opportunities all discriminate against the obese or overweight person. Consequently, the obese or overweight person learns many self-defeating and self-degrading attitudes. |

Carlson at the King Gustaf V Research Institute showed conclusively that niacin prevented the release of fatty acids, whether the stress was psychological or physical.6 He found that psychological stress was much less harmful and subjects were calmer if they previously had been given high doses of niacin.
They were also protected physically. When tested after being stressed, patients' adrenaline blood levels were high, but their lipid levels had not increased. If they were not given niacin prior to being exposed to stress, there was a major increase in low density lipoprotein cholesterol. |

Magnesium deficiency, even when mild, increases susceptibility to various types of neurological and psychological stressors in both animals and healthy human subjects. "Magnesium deficiency increases susceptibility to the physiologic damage produced by stress. The adrenergic effects of psychological stress induce a shift of magnesium from the intracellular to the extracellular space, increasing urinary excretion and eventually depleting body stores," reports Dr. Leo Galland. |

We don't have to have a physical diagnosis, as in naming our problem as lupus, asthma, pancreatic cancer, or whatever, or a psychological diagnosis, as in naming our problem as anxiety or panic disorder. We don't even have to blame ourselves for what we perceive as our inadequacies, such as being trapped in our childhood trauma or unable to resolve grief. From the NES perspective, our root problem is stuck, or static, information in one Integrator or another. |
| Instead, it addresses the emotional issues that surround being male and all the cultural, emotional, and psychological baggage you may carry because of it. It is directed toward maleness not only in terms of gender but also as a foundation for identity. The Energetic
Star 11 Infoceutical's effect is positive in nature, bioenergetically reinforcing what Peter calls "male charisma." It works bioenergetically at a mostly emotional level, helping to clear blocks to such feelings as confidence, willpower, social warmth, and well-being. |
| Stress, emotions, and other psychological states were recognized as affecting, and in some cases even causing, disease. Lifestyle choices became almost as important a factor in health as genetics or exposure to pathogens or toxins. Attitude, such as the will to live or an optimistic outlook, was identified as an important predictor of who would have a good outcome from a therapy and who might not. We are still in the midst of Era II medicine, of what might be called mind-body medicine. We see only the first glimmers of the dawning of Era III medicine, the hallmark of which is the nonlocal mind. |

Nor does it cover extreme or chronic itchiness, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or psychological signs. These are signs and symptoms that should send you running to your doctor or even the emergency room. Finally, Body Signs doesn't cover diagnostic tests or treatments. That's strictly between you and your doctor—and all too often your insurance company.

Recommendations include determining what factor(s) are contributing to the depression, eliminating allergens, adding regular physical exercise to a daily routine, and seeking psychological support or counseling. Enzyme therapy can be used to improve nutrient absorption (particularly when eating habits are poor), improve energy levels, mitigate the effects of allergens, and balance the pH and support the immune system in the body to increase overall well-being. |

WARNING SIGN
People with nasal polyps can be allergic to aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve). Because an allergic reaction to these drugs can be life-threatening, you should avoid them unless under the close supervision of your doctor.
A DRY NOSE
A dry nose can be just as irritating as a running nose. |
| SPEAKING OF SIGNS
People with this condition often display signs of psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder that usually starts in childhood and has the hallmark signs of motor and vocal tics. Trichotillomania occasionally runs in families. Indeed, researchers recently found two mutated genes that may be responsible in some cases.

A LUMP ON THE JAW
In the past, the term hystericus was used to describe disorders that primarily affected women and were thought to be of psychological origin. Indeed, Freud and some of his followers believed that globus hystericus, which is rarely seen in men, signified fear of or guilt about sex, especially oral sex.

And fitness does have other benefits, including psychological ones that can be of particular help if you're stressed from an extended plateau or just need to get your mind off food. Exercise releases endorphins, which have a relaxing effect. Exercise also can help you settle in emotionally at the same time that your body is settling in to your new way of eating. Yoga is an excellent stress reducer, as is tai chi. Although it won't build muscle, meditation is another tried-and-true stress reliever. |

People with this treatable syndrome are unfortunately often misdiagnosed as having a psychological disorder. In most cases, Meige's is more annoying and embarrassing than debilitating. But in severe cases, the spasms may cause the mouth to clamp shut, making eating and talking extremely difficult. And in rare cases, it can signal a brain tumor.
EYE TWITCHES
Meige's syndrome was named after Henry Meige, a French neurologist who first described this condition in 1910. But this condition was known hundreds of years before. |

Stress is often the social and psychological pressure to do things we really don't want to do, as well as to do too much in an unreasonably short amount of time. Some stress is inevitable because life requires compromise, and other types of stress (such as my deadline in writing this book) actually push us to greater creativity and accomplishments. For most of us, however, stress pushes us out of a zone in which we feel calm, relaxed, satisfied, and happy, and it takes a toll on our physical health and emotional well-being. |
| In the animal kingdom, psychological and emotional stresses are usually fleeting. When a lion chases a deer, the deer immediately releases large amounts of stress hormones, including adrenaline. These chemicals heighten the animal's physical fight-or-flight response and also function as neurotransmitters that sharpen decision making, such as figuring out how to escape. If the deer successfully gets away, its stress hormones quickly decline, and the animal calms down and resumes grazing. |
| Why I Wrote This Book
Although I originally trained to be a sociologist, with a strong emphasis on social and psychological behavior, I've spent more than thirty years writing about nutrition and health. I've long been fascinated by the interplay of society, behavior, eating habits, and health—including mental health. As I looked back at my own experiences, I realized that my moods and behavior were often close to the edge and occasionally erupted in anger. |
| Women are more likely to seek professional help, such as psychological counseling. Men have a higher rate of suicide, partly because they internalize (rather than express) their feelings.
• Men are less likely than women to be aware of their relationship-dependency needs.
• Women's moods are more likely to be influenced by some aspects of their biology, such as menstrual periods, pregnancy, postpregnancy, and menopause.
The many stresses in our lives lead to neuronutrient and neurotransmitter imbalances, which set the stage for chronic mood problems. |

However, many patients have tried diets and failed and now want something a bit more powerful to curb their appetite or something to help them curb cravings and a psychological obsession with food. These people will keep going to doctors until they find one willing to write a prescription for a diet drug, and they usually don't have to search for long. Or, lured by the promise of near-magical weight loss, they pick up some ma huang or another dietary supplement at the drugstore. |

The study was meant to assess general mood changes in a healthy population, but scores relating to anxiousness really stood out on the students' psychological tests. The experimental group's anxiety scores dropped 14 percent versus a statistically insignificant 3 percent for the control group (an improvement that could be explained by the placebo effect). Not coinciden-tally, the experimental groups fitness levels improved 8.5 percent versus 1.8 percent for the control group. Clearly, there is a connection between how much you exercise and how anxious you feel. |

This is not to say healers dismiss the faith factor or the psychological aspect of their healing that may be working through hypnosis or autosuggestion.
A healer concentrates his or her attention on the affected area, either while touching it with their fingers or palms of their hands, or with their hands on the patient's head. The patient often feels sensations being transmitted from the hands as healing energies enter their aura.
Auras—luminous areas of light with misty outlines—are believed to surround people, animals, plants and sometimes even inanimate objects. |
| BIOENERGETICS
Negative attitudes and emotions such as fear, anger, personal psychological problems and stress are expressed in the way we sit, stand, move and breathe. Bioenergetics makes us aware of poor habitual postures and body movements and uses exercises to unlock this 'character armouring' and the associated emotions. The body thus regains its ability to function freely and results in a more positive attitude, for improved energy and vitality. |

Eating Well Means Good Health
Microscopic, yet potentially lethal, organisms invade us throughout our lives. Harmful bacteria and viruses can be found in or on almost everything we eat, drink, breathe or touch. Our immune system, which consists of special cells within the body, recognises and fights these marauding invaders. Without the immune system our bodies would not cope with such constant attacks and people would die from simple ailments like the common cold. |
